Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the brainchild of Jack Thorne and showing in Chicago this winter. He authored the original play with some assistance from the original series’ author J.K. Rowling and beloved theater director John Tiffany. The original Jack Thorne script initially only included a frugal two acts. But the creators expanded it to four for an compelling theatrical experience that audiences would always hold dear.

This Harry Potter play adaptation begins when Albus Potter meets Scorpios Malfoy on their way to Hogwarts. While Albus cannot match his father’s valorous renown, Scorpios blunders his own biased distinction as a death eater’s offspring or the circulating rumors of being Voldemort’s child.

Each character encounters familiar maturity tests like carving an identity separate from their fathers and correcting the previous generation’s sins. They hope to set in motion a better future for themselves and their cohorts. Their modus operandi involves exploiting a time turner so that they can return to the past and keep Cedric Diggory — one of Voldemort’s targets — alive.

Can altering the past correct the wrongs of the present? Or will it make things worse for the desperate couple? The Harry Potter play promises to answer these questions during its nearly three-hour runtime. The audience can grab refreshments and hydrate during a brief intermission at the performance’s half-way point.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child claimed international acclaim with performances in Melbourne, Australia, Hamburg, Germany, and Tokyo, Japan. It has captivated viewers far and wide since its 2016 premier at the Palace Theatre in London, England. Each production successfully infuses original scores from experimental music phenomena Imogen Heap.
