James M. Nederlander Theatre
ALI is the Broadway-bound musical which follows the boxing titan and twentieth century icon Muhammad Ali. The story about a man who used his fame to champion human rights is headed for a springtime rumble in The Windy City of Chicago. The show will have its out-of-town premiere at the esteemed James M. Nederlander Theatre from April 22 until May 18 2025. James M. Nederlander Theatre is the perfect venue for such an iconic musical. From theater to music, the venue hosts the finest shows around the world.
Designed by the undeniably talented George L. and Cornelius W. Rapp, James M. Nederlander Theatre was one of the first motion picture palaces designed to create a complete experience for audiences. Over the years, it has hosted popular first-run motion pictures and lavish stage shows. Among the many stars that have taken to the stage are The Three Stooges, Judy Garland, Al Jolson, Sophie Tucker, Fanny Brice, Duke Ellington, and Danny Kaye. With an epic roster of talent like that, it’s obvious that James M. Nederlander Theatre is the perfect venue to tell the story of the legendary Muhammad Ali.
Synopsis
Known and loved around the world as “The Greatest of All Time,” Muhammad Ali was born in 1942 and grew up during the early years of television and the American dream. His upbringing in Louisville, Kentucky, along with love and unconditional support from his mom (and later from his beloved wife Lonnie), set the stage for Muhammad Ali to become the greatest boxer of all time. He was a formidable fighter. Though, the toughest battles he faced were often out of the ring. The most cherished champion of his generation was also an candid advocate for social justice and equality. His inspiring combination of courage, swagger, compassion, wit, and charisma galvanized the masses during The American Civil Rights Movement. His desire for a world without hate has roused generations of activists who still fight for social change to this day. ALI tells this epic story of “The Greatest of All Time.”
Creative Team
The musical is helmed by British director and bookwright Clint Dyer, with composer and musician Teddy Abrams lending his talent as musical director of the Louisville Orchestra. The creative team also includes Choreography/Fight Choreography by Rich + Tone Talauega (MJ The Musical), Set Design by Anna Fleischle (Hangmen), Costume Design by Emilio Sosa (Sweeney Todd), Lighting Design by Jen Schriever (A Strange Loop), Video/Projections/Media Design by Tal Yarden (Network) and Gino Ricardo Green (Get Up Stand Up), and Sound Effects Design by Ben Grant (Othello). Destiny Lilly, CSA of The Telsey Office takes on the role of casting director. Casting will be announced soon so keep your eyes peeled!

It is going to be an incredibly special event for everyone involved, and we hope to bring joy and healing to all Louisvillians, in light of the senseless tragedies over the past week.”
The new musical ALI celebrates the life and legacy of the esteemed heavyweight boxing champion and humanitarian. The production will premiere in Muhammad Ali’s hometown, Louisville, at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts in fall 2024. The show will have its out-of-town premiere at the esteemed James M. Nederlander Theatre from April 22 until May 18 2025.
