Behold the story of Alexander Hamilton! What would you do if history had its eyes on you? And what will you give for the sake of legacy, both yours and your country’s?
For 2 hours and 45 minutes–plus an intermission–Hamilton will take you through the annals of the American Revolution, combining scholarly accuracy with classic Broadway spectacle!
Notable for its unconventional lyricism, the production draws inspiration from the sprawling genres of hip-hop, soul, and R&B. It also casts actors of differing ethnicities as the 18th-century revolutionary leaders in an artistic decision Miranda described as “America then, as told by America now.”

Based on Ron Chernow’s 2004 biography of Alexander Hamilton, the production spent a grueling seven-year period in development that began in 2008. Its world premiere launched in February 2015 to a sold-out months-long stint at the Public Theatre in Downtown Manhattan. From the get-go, Hamilton opened to universal acclaim, racking up thirty-four nominations across the Lucille Lortel, Drama League, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards. It won in twenty-one categories, including multiple Outstanding Musical accolades.
In August of the same year, the production made its Broadway debut at the Richard Rodgers Theatre with an even greater positive reception. It received a record-setting sixteen nominations at the 70th Tony Awards, winning eleven (second-most, behind Mel Brook’s The Producers). The run also garnered a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 2018, Miranda, Kail, Blankenbuehler, and Lacamoire were inducted to the Kennedy Center Honors with an unprecedented citation as “trailblazing creators of a transformative work that defies category.”
Hamilton’s successful first years gave way to several local and international productions. These include a seven-time Olivier Award-winning West End engagement, a box office-breaking Chicago run, and a 2017 North American tour that continues to this day.
